Learning should be a fun experience that fosters growth through respect of the subject and each other. It is important that everyone focuses on being the best digital citizen they can be. There are many character traits that I find to be important to be an exemplary digital citizen, but to be brief I will focus on my top three.
The first of those traits is treating others with respect. It is important to remember that we all come from different backgrounds with many different experiences. If we look find value in each person, and we value the input each person brings, we will grow together in our understanding of the subject. Just as there is no room for bullies in a traditional learning environment, there is no room for bullies in the digital learning environment.
The second trait I would like to focus on is empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand feelings of another. Whether we are showing empathy for another digital learner or a person that is the subject matter of what we are learning, it is important to understand what the other person is feeling or could be feeling. If we should empathy towards each person, we find ourselves being more caring and respectful. Empathy will help the learning environment be one that everyone feels safe to be their true self.
The final trait I want to discuss today is to be protective. It is important that you protect yourself and others while in a digital environment. This means to be protective of personal information. We should not share other learner’s information that they have not approved. This would include pictures, personal data, and private information.
As I said, there are many traits to being an exemplary digital learner, but I feel these three are among the most important. Please find a way to implement these traits into your own digital citizenship.
