What would be needed to bring an ideal learning community to fruition? In my mind the two most significant needs for the ideal learning community is a place that people feel safe and a site that is easy to navigate. Two of the most common issues that I find with Digital Learning Communities is that people are not treated with respect or the site is too complicated to navigate. If a site is made that with simple ways to navigate, then the learner can spend more time focused on the subject that brought them to the site. The second issue simply needs a site administrator to ensure that every person is treated with the utmost respect. Now that the two main barriers are out of the way, all one needs to do is focus on the subject matter that should be included in the Digital Learning Group.
What can one do to make an existing DLC more attractive to and welcoming for students and teachers? Having a great Digital Learning Center is an accomplishment, and keeping it a great Digital Learning Center is an even greater accomplishment. The platform that the DLC is delivered through must be attractive and user friendly. Many of the DLCs I have visited have minimal eye appeal. There is so much great information out there in the DLCs, but many people cannot navigate the site or just don't try because the site is not aesthetically appealing. The mission of the DLC should be clear at the home page and the navigation tools should be easy to locate at the top of the page.
