I have spent time searching to see what limitations exists in my area for accessing the internet. I found that while access to broadband is readily available, but devices and other socioeconomic barriers can still make accessing the broadband difficult. By visiting Fixed Broadband Deployment a person can determine if there is broadband in their area. With the cost of devices constantly on the rise it is difficult to key students in a low socioeconomic area with technology that can access broadband internet. We are fortunate in my area to have a new local library to offer free use of technology and access to the internet. The unfortunate part is that I live in a county of 400 square miles and there is only one library that is centrally located. The limitations of only having one location makes it difficult on those without transportation. This leaves the question, what can be done to help with access? In my area the answer is public transportation and/or grants to assist with devices for socioeconomically challenged persons. This is a difficult challenge with budgets and assistance being very limited.
